Boca Chica, Texas – SpaceX launched its massive Starship rocket on its fourth orbital test flight early Thursday morning, marking another step forward in the company's efforts to develop fully reusable space transportation systems for future Moon and Mars missions.
The launch took place at 8:45 AM local time from the SpaceX Starbase facility in South Texas. The booster and upper stage separated successfully, and for the first time, both stages completed planned reentry procedures before splashing down in the ocean as part of recovery tests.
Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, called the mission "a major milestone toward rapid reusability," adding that each successful test brings humanity closer to becoming a multi-planetary species.
The Starship system, when operational, is expected to carry both cargo and crew to destinations like the Moon, Mars, and even Earth-to-Earth suborbital routes in under an hour.
NASA has contracted SpaceX for its Artemis missions, which plan to land astronauts on the Moon using a customized version of Starship.
